New code of ethics and deontology for landlords in Quebec

Press Releases

Montreal, July 26, 2022 - The Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ) announces its intention to adopt, over the next year, a new code of ethics and deontology for landlords who are members of its organization. There are more than 277,000 private rental property owners in Quebec who house over 1.3 million households. Many provincial and municipal laws and regulations already severely dictate the duties of landlords. Although the organization has rules surrounding membership within CORPIQ, a new process was needed to better meet the aspirations of members and to showcase the best practices of Quebec landlords.

New code of ethics and deontology for landlords in Quebec

"The future Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for members of the Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ) will bring together the principles and rules that must inspire the conduct of landlords in Quebec. It is a guide aimed at ensuring the integrity, honesty, and professionalism of its members at all times. This code of ethics and deontology will aim to endorse the good practices of the CORPIQ network and promote them so that all Quebec landlords can be inspired by them on a daily basis. By joining CORPIQ, members will ensure that the new code, which will be adopted in the coming year, is respected. They will automatically commit to collaborate in the verification process and follow the measures determined, if necessary, by the future Ethics Committee," explained Mr. Marc-André Plante, Director, Public Affairs and Government Relations of CORPIQ.

It should be noted that the Canadian Federation of Real Estate Associations recently adopted a code of ethics that will certainly inspire the work of CORPIQ's directors. The issues of Quebec landlords are different, especially from a legislative point of view. Soon, we will also announce a collaboration with experts who will reinforce the work of reflection of the members who will be consulted for this purpose.

"CORPIQ intends to take advantage of the adoption of its future code of ethics and professional conduct to offer online training to all rental landlords who are members of CORPIQ. A vast promotion and awareness work is planned. Today, our organization is showing leadership and responsibility to all the players in the field. Moreover, our intention is not to replace the current authorities," concluded Mr. Plante.
