Financial assistance is available for your tenants in need

We invite our members and rental property landlords to take note of the Société d'habitation du Québec's Shelter Allowance program administered by Revenu Québec. This is a financial aid to pay the rent that is available for low-income households who use too much of their budget for housing.

Thus, your tenants may be entitled to $100, $150 or $170 per month. An indicative table is provided on the Revenu Québec website indicating the amount they are entitled to based on their family situation and the maximum income eligibility. It should be noted that this financial assistance is paid per dwelling only, regardless of the number of occupants.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • be a single person 50 years of age or older;
  • be a couple where one of the two partners is 50 years old or older
  • be part of a low-income family with at least one dependent child.

Please note that the program is not eligible for a person who:

who is receiving a rent supplement;

  • whose total value of Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs), non-registered accounts (including spousal accounts, if applicable), exceeds $50,000.
  • Please note that tenants who are accepted into the program in the following weeks or months will receive a retroactive amount calculated from October 1, 2022.

It is therefore strongly suggested that you share this information within your rental housing stock to inform your tenants of the existence of this financial assistance. To do so, here are some documents that you can send by email to your tenants or print and post in the entrance gates of your buildings.

If you want to share the information with your tenants, be sure to include this link in your communications.

If you want to order the poster (IN-165.2.1 and 2.2) and the insert (IN-165) in printed format, it can be requested through Revenu Québec's online service.
