CORPIQ vigorously denounces cases of illegal eviction
The Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ) vigorously denounces the illegal evictions recently reported in the media and wishes to remind that the legitimate grounds for eviction are found in the Civil Code of Quebec and that they must be followed to the letter by all landlords.
Benoit Ste-Marie, Director General of CORPIQ, adds: "CORPIQ is in favour of the principle of strengthening the legislation on evictions to avoid situations that are contrary to the spirit of the law. The legislator allows, under very specific conditions, urgent or major maintenance of rental units in Quebec by landlords to better respond the needs."
For CORPIQ, it is imperative that corrective measures be taken upstream to encourage the maintenance of the rental stock while allowing tenants to enjoy their full rights and benefit from quality affordable housing. CORPIQ wishes to meet with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to propose solutions that could lead to a better supervision.
CORPIQ has never defended and will not defend owner-investors who practice illegal evictions. It is through consultation and the will to understand the causes and to find solutions that these practices will come to an end. The current context of the housing sector requires a collective work of the actors to better face a historical situation where there is a lack of supply in many communities.
